Dangerous goods are those goods that, due to their nature, could damage either the environment or people’s health.

Dangerous goods are divided into 5 classes (and various sub-classes)

The type of packaging, labelling and methods used to transport your goods depend on the class they belong to.

Il tipo di imballaggio, etichettatura e trasporto di cui hai bisogno dipende dalla classe di appartenenza della merce di cui vuoi effettuare il processo di trasporto.

  • Class 1 – Explosive materials
  • Class 2 – Gas (flammable, non flammable, toxic and non toxic)
  • Class 3 – Flammable liquids
  • Class 4 – Flammable solids
  • Classe 5 – Oxidising substances and organic peroxides
  • Class 6 – Toxic and infectious substances
  • Class 7 – Radioactive materials
  • Class 8 – Corrosive materials
  • Class 9 – Miscellaneous dangerous items

Not everyone knows, for instance, that lithium batteries are actually dangerous goods because they could cause a short circuit if subject to shock, high temperature or high pressure.

There are various types of lithium batteries:

Do not forget that all products and devices containing lithium batteries are also classified as dangerous goods.

Transportation of dangerous goods by air

The International Air Transportation Association’s Dangerous Goods Regulation (IATA DGR) is the reference point to prepare, handle, and accept dangerous goods for air transportation.

This classification defines all procedures relating to the air transportation of DGR cargo (from packaging to labelling).

In order to issue the airway bill, forwarders must be IATA DGR-certified, that means they are entitled to handle and ship dangerous goods by air.

Contact your specialist consultants if you need to ship dangerous goods by air.

Transportation of dangerous goods by road

The Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (also known as ADR, which stands for Accord Européen Relatif au Transport International des Merchandises Dangereuses par Route) aims to ensure the safe transportation of dangerous goods.

This agreement contains all regulations regarding the transportation of dangerous goods by road, from packaging to load securing and labelling.

Over the years, the safe transportation of dangerous goods has become an increasingly important issue. In fact, today, drivers and trucks need to be certified in order to handle such shipments and the same applies to all operators involved in the process in order to reduce the risk of accidents occurring during loading, transportation and unloading operations.

We carry out the shipment of dangerous goods by road (truck). If you need help with this service, contact our specialist consultants and they will be able to provide assistance throughout the entire process.

Transportation of dangerous goods by sea

The transportation of dangerous goods by sea (IMO) in containers represents a substantial part of the overall sea shipments.

The transportation of dangerous goods and of marine pollutants on ocean vessels is regulated respectively by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).

The International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG) is the international guidelines to the transportation of dangerous goods or marine pollutants by sea.

Packaging of dangerous goods

When working with dangerous goods, it is of paramount importance to pay attention to every single link in the transportation and distribution chain.

Such shipments are very delicate because one single mistake is likely to cause serious damage to other goods, to the environment and to the producing/receiving company.

This is why all steps in the process must be studied right down to the finest detail.

The risk of having the shipment rejected or of running into high penalties is always around the corner.
